Choosing Your Child Care

Choosing Your Child Care

Choosing a Childcare facility is one of the most difficult and emotional decisions a parent must make.

Here are a few things to look for when selecting a quality daycare:

Curriculum and Enrichment

The best childcare centers have structured schedules that include plenty of time for physical activity as well as quiet time. Look for lesson plans posted outside of the classroom with examples of the children’s work.  Teachers and staff should have a full understanding of the different developmental stages and plan their lessons accordingly.

In addition to well thought out curriculum, toys should be stimulating and age appropriate. Weather doesn’t always cooperate. Look for a center that also has inside space for the children to be able to get their exercise and activity during the day. Mental and physically stimulating activity promotes learning, development, happiness, and a healthy balanced lifestyle for children.

Safety and Security

The number one priority of any quality childcare facility must be the safety and security of its children. Classrooms should be clean and organized with well trained staff.   Check to see that all rooms are equipped with proper first aid equipment and all staff certifications are up to date.

Playground equipment should be sturdy and have soft landing areas. The facility should be properly maintained and all windows and doors securely fastened.

Communication

Communication with parents is an extremely important way for a quality daycare to establish trust with its families. Parents should feel involved and respected. The center should have an open door policy and work with you to develop a plan for your child.

Notes, emails, pictures, updated newsletters, and a well maintained website are represented in a quality childcare facility.

Compare what you’ve learned and how you felt about each program you’ve considered, and make the best choice for your child and your family.
